Preparing Your Home for the Arrival of Your New Carpet

Owning a home is all about being prepared. And the arrival of new carpet is no exception.

Southern Woods is here for you every step of the way! Being prepared for carpet installation will make the entire process go faster and more efficiently.

Carpet Installation Professionals

Carpet installation is a skill that is acquired through years of flooring experience, so hiring professional carpet installers, such as Southern Woods, is just plain smart.

Understanding the basics of carpet installation gives you the knowledge to hold us to the highest quality that is offered. Southern Woods wants you to be as proud of your floors as we are installing them.

Professional carpet installers use a seaming diagram as their “blueprint”

This indicates the overall layout of the carpet, the correct placement of seams and transitions, and aids them in the preparation and cutting of the carpet.

Flooring professionals understand the fine art of carpet seaming

While carpet seams are unavoidable, we excel at minimizing and hiding seams. This requires years of carpet installation experience and tried and true flooring industry methods. Case in point: we place seams away from areas subjected to pivoting traffic, and we do not run seams perpendicular to doorway openings.

Keep in mind that, occasionally, additional carpet must be ordered to better match patterns at the seams.

We do our very best to guarantee a smooth transition.

When two different flooring products encounter – say, carpeting and a hardwood floor – it’s called a transition. Southern Woods matches the surface heights of various flooring products to minimize the transitions. It is a good idea to review transitions with your sales representative during your free estimate.

What to Know and Do Before Carpet Installation Day

Relocation of furniture

Removal of  all furniture, objects, and materials from the areas to be carpeted is required. If included in your quote, we can move large furniture pieces from the new floor space and move it all back into place after installation. Before installation, you’ll be responsible for emptying the contents of china cabinets and closets and removing breakables, knickknacks, and electronics to prevent damage.

What’s to be done with your present floor covering?

Please consider how your old flooring material will be taken up and disposed of. This can be a time-consuming and messy job.  Discuss our removal and disposal service with your associate when we develop your quote.

If you prefer to remove your present flooring yourself, do it at least one day prior to carpet installation to allow for cleanup and floor preparation. If removing old carpet, please leave tack strips in place and pull the staples out of the floor from the original pad.

Now turn your attention to the trim

You should know that, in many situations, shoe moldings must be removed for carpet installation. Southern Woods will do this at an additional charge, but will not be responsible for damage or breakage due to dry or brittle wood.

We are flooring experts; if touch up paint on woodwork or baseboards is needed you’ll need to reach out to a friendly painting professional to help you with these minor and industry expected items.

Get Expert Advice on Your Subflooring

While typically not necessary for carpet installations, your pre-existing subfloor may need to be prepared to receive the new carpet installation, or a new subfloor may be needed. Southern Woods is equipped to help with most subflooring preparation work and these details can be discussed with you!

Questions?

We’re Here To Help

Include a door plan in your preparation

When the new carpeting is installed, there’s always the likelihood that the doors, especially basement, bedroom, and closet doors, may not clear the new carpet and swing free.

We may need to remove doors in order to install the new carpeting and re-hang them at an additional cost. If there is a clearance issue, you may want to arrange for an experienced carpenter to shave or cut down your door(s) after the installation of your new carpet.

    Don’t let cleanup be a toss-up

Installing a new carpet produces waste. These materials will be collected and disposed of Southern Woods. While some flooring companies may charge for this service we include this service.

On Carpet Installation Day, Be Home and Handy

Be prepared to be available on the day of installation in case the carpet installation crew has questions. Your presence will insure that the correct carpet is installed in the right areas. Because it is difficult to estimate the length and circumstances of each job, Southern Woods can not provide a specific time of arrival but will give a time frame we plan to arrive.

    Your family is Our Concern

We will use a variety of tools and techniques that can make the work area hazardous. Please make sure that your children and pets are kept out of the work area on installation day.

    Follow Through With a Walk-Through

We recommend that, prior to the completion of the installation, you walk through the job with our team. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions and be clear on any final details.

    Prepare for a Healthy Environment

If you are sensitive to odors, good ventilation should be established. Some of the chemicals used in the construction of carpet, as well as the adhesives or hot melt seaming tapes, can have an odor for as long as 48 to 72 hours after installation. Please provide the room with adequate ventilation to help with these temporary issues.

    Address Post-Installation Issues

Shedding is a natural part of a new carpet. Frequent vacuuming for the first few days should remove any loose fibers from the carpet’s surface.

Sprouting refers to small tufts or loops of carpet that become visible after the installation. Use a small pair of scissors to carefully trim the loose fibers flush with the surface of the new carpet.

Finally, if wrinkles or ripples appear in the new carpet, it may be necessary to re-stretch the carpet. Please contact us to have this done professionally.

    Being Prepared Means Being Informed

We want you to be as well informed as possible about the installation of your new carpet. To that end, we’ve assembled the most knowledgeable salespeople and given our teams knowledge, training and tools to provide you with solid information, reliable resources, and proven flooring solutions.

We hope that the carpet information we’ve featured here leads you to a better understanding of how to prepare for your new carpet!
